Why You’re Coping Skills Aren’t Helping (Yet)
The Quick Answer: Coping skills, like box breathing or grounding, are great for crisis management. They can help you get from a 9 to a 6 so you don’t explode. But, they won’t stop the spirals from happening. Lasting change requires moving off the hamster wheel of symptoms and into deeper, relational work where your nervous system can experience a true, felt exhale.
The Box Breathing Reality Check
We’ve all been there. You’re spiraling and someone - maybe even a previous therapist - tells you to “Just try box breathing”
Did you find that helpful? Or did they even explain why it works (or doesn’t)
Grounding and breathing are important tools, but they are like the emergency brake on a car. They can stop you from crashing in a moment of crisis, but they won’t fix the engine. If coping skills are the only work you’re doing, the spiral returns, and the cycle repeats. That’s not healing; that’s just surviving.
Coping VS Healing: Knowing the Difference
Coping skills aren’t bad. They are just misunderstood.
Coping is for the Crisis : These tools help you ride the wave. They keep you at an 8 so you don’t hit a 10
Healing is for the Root : This is the intentional work that solves the underlying reason you are feeling the crisis in the first place.
Coping skills help you endure burnout; relational therapy helps you move away from it.
The Power of the Felt Exhale
True safety doesn’t come from a breathing exercise you do alone in your room. It comes from connection.
When you are with a real person who witnesses your experience, validates your struggle and helps you integrate those feelings into your life, your nervous system does something a brathing app can’t trigger: It takes a felt exhale. In our sessions, we arn’’t just managing symptoms; we are building the safety required for your body to finally relax it’s guard.
